"Welcome Home"
The RTL Media Group is Germany’s leading provider of video content. It not only functions as a unified umbrella brand for free TV channels like RTL, VOX and n-tv, but also for various pay TV channels, digital platforms like Clipfish and Comedy Rocket and lots of other business divisions like the advertising marketer IP Deutschland and content producers like infoNetwork.
360° web experience
For the market leader we developed a digital presence that opens the media corporation’s doors to visitors around the clock. Pioneering innovative 360° WebGL imaging and video technology gives users a glimpse behind the scenes into the company’s daily business. The hotspots provide an explorative added value for the users, allowing them to access high-quality content created by the brains behind the company. Of course it’s also possible to browse the website’s content in the classic way.
Focus on motion
Video content is usually consumed passively and requires a minor degree of interaction and therefore cognitive effort. But it is capable of conveying a large number of impressions, which image and text contents alone cannot. Exploring the options of this medium is a science and an art in itself. Our aim was to demonstrate the pooled expertise of the media group in this particular discipline on the website.
A tour at the media group
Using a 360° WebGL player, which we individually designed and built ourselves, users can explore a total of six rooms within the company. It’s up to the users themselves whether they decide to switch from the 360° photo mode to the experimental 360° video view, thereby visually immersing themselves even deeper in the motion world of the RTL Media Group. There are a number of hotspots (interaction options) in each room, which provide fascinating background information and insights and of course contain the most important contact and touchpoints.
Explorative meets informative – the triple-layer approach
As well as the explorative 360° stage, classically structured access to the website’s contents is also provided. Together, the content pages, information overlays of hotspots and the 360° stage combine to form an unique experience in which the different layers overlap to create an overall experience. A main focus for us was to ensure a natural, intuitive feel when switching between the layers in terms of the interactive behaviour and motion design.
Providing insights
The starting point of our concept development was that we wanted to portray the RTL Media Group as it actually is – a modern and efficiently operating media company. Revealing its own identity was particularly important as the group’s well-known TV formats are not necessarily synonymous with the company itself. Instead our aim was to emphasise the company’s overall function and highlight the areas that usually aren’t in the spotlight.
Direct access for all target groups
Press, job applicants, partners and also their own employees are given an insight into the area that is relevant to them and to ensure quick and easy access. For aspiring young talents, who are potential new team members of the media group, it was our aim to formulate an address that is as down-to-earth and uncomplicated as possible.
Cooperating with moving image experts
In order to create transparency and establish an emotional connection to a likeable employer, we collaborated with the production company Vision Factory to create interviews with the media group’s managers, decision-makers and employees. This content provides an opportunity for the virtual visitor to get to know the everyday working practices just as well as each individual person and find out how they identify with the company.
Every detail counts
To give the website a contemporary, modern look, we advanced the visual design to communicate interesting contents in a modern way. Softer shapes, elegant lines and superior animations round off the overall emotional experience and underline the innovative character of the world that is being portrayed.
